remembering greg cannom the legendary special effects maestro behind icon
In a sorrowful turn of events that almost feels like a plot twist in one of his own fantastical films, Greg Cannom - the chap who brought life to some astounding cinematic creatures in films like THE LOST BOYS - has shuffled off this mortal coil. And while our hearts are heavy, it's the special effects landscape that will arguably feel this loss most keenly. But, fear not dear reader, for even as we mourn his passing, we must remember that Cannom has left us an opulent legacy festooned with challenges to keep the technocrats occupied for many a moon.
Known for his slightly mad artist vibes, Cannom was as keen a technician as he was an imagination engine. He had a penchant for raising the bar so high it would need a space shuttle to reach. And now the baton has been passed, leaving those left behind to somehow make sense of the marvellously intricate battle plan he's left behind. Truly, his life's work stands as a testament to the ongoing game of Whac-A-Mole that is special effects technology - constantly evolving yet always ready to smack us in face with a new problem just when we think we've solved the last.
If there's a silver lining to be had - aside from having an excuse to watch THE LOST BOYS on repeat whilst raising a glass to Cannom - it’s that those of us left in the trenches of technology now have a new Everest to scale. Indeed, keeping up with the Joneses in technoville will be a titbit easier without Greg constantly redefining what's humanly possible. I jest, of course. In reality, it's quite the opposite. As we bid farewell to this special effects titan, we must also gird our loins for the mammoth task of attempting to fill his sizable boots.
In summary, while we've lost a key player from the special effects realm, team technology has not lost its collective bottle. We will continue to face each new glitch and confounding technical Everest with a stiff upper lip and a determination worthy of a Brit in a queue for a lukewarm cuppa at the village fête. Chin up, keep calm and carry on, Cannom-style. Read more here.
